windows was originally written in C++,
although most of the code was written by other programmers as open source and then intergrated into windows, then patented by gates,, in other words he stole it from the public domain,
the plus contribution of windows is its out of the box installation and originally it undercut the price of the competition, till it cornered the market then the price shot up,
not seen what language vista is written in

wow where did you hear all that crazy stuff?
Bulk of windows was written in C and ASM, only some utilities were written in C++ but definitely not the core, you can't expect C++ to do anything but fail with time-critical operations. Windows did not steal anything from the "public domain", the only issue was some BSD code in the windows TCP/IP stack but they were credited, the license was not broken, and the code was free to use. Nobody uses the original winsock anymore anyway since Windows did release Winsock 2 which is all of their own code. (ws2_32.dll)

Wow, so you can basically write a private OS in C++?

| No, you cannot, just as it is not possible to write an OS in an interpreted language.
