so
forum.cheatengine.org/viewtopic.php?t=602561
is possibly referring to my question, but i didn't really get the explanation of what .scandata (pointermap) does differently
to my understanding the .PTR just stores a list of pointers, which can be loaded in the "Pointer Scan" window. .scandata pointermaps can't be loaded there, and when using it to compare to other pointermaps you need to associate with the address with which the pointermap was generated.
so what is the deal with .scandata?
also, when you rescan (ctrl+r) in the "Pointer Scan" window, can you filter for an address range instead of only an exact address?

.PTR stores a list of pointerpaths that end up in the final destination that you wish (baseaddress of pointer, followed by offsets)
scandata is a list of all the pointers in the target process. Not paths, just raw pointers
the scandata is used to generate the .PTR list., You can close the game, or never even have installed the game, and do a pointerscan with the scandata. You just need an address to scan for (hence the reason the address at the time the map was generated is needed)
If you do a scan with a secondary scandata present you can save your harddisk (and time) by not writing results that are invalid according to the secondary scandata file
And no, rescan does not support range, except the "readable" and "unreadable" 'range'

| oh, so it just dumps everything in memory that is a valid address into the .scandata file and then does a pointerscan using that?
