As far as I know, you could do this in Windows XP but, Windows 7 and probably newer versions will not let you remove the icon. They seem to display an icon no mater what. The best I can suggest is to use a blank Transparent icon for the app. That would still leave a blank area where the icon is though.
It's because >=Win7 uses the Aero theme which replaces the whole Icon & Text setup with just Icon. If it is mandatory that you remove the icon instead of just replacing it with something that would define your application then you can make it transparent but I would recommend against doing that myself.

You're right. I've deleted the icon with the help of other tools, but there will still be a blank part in the tray area. I wonder if it is possible to hide the program after attaching a process
