Cheat Engine

I like to play a lot of old games which need to be emulated and some of them are old 90's era mac games I played as a child. One game called "Galactic Empire" has a time limit I have been trying to alter because I hate time limits. I found the value but it won't change.
I've been reading other posts with this issue, I take the value and try to find "what accesses this address" however when I do and the message "This will attach the debugger of Cheat Engine to the current process. Continue?" comes up and I hit [yes] BasiliskII shuts down.
Is there another way to find what I think you call an "encrypted value?"
