Put $100 down on one with layaway.
First pistol to ever buy, anyone know how the background checks are done? Questionnaire? Quiz? Evaluation test? What is it?
No felonies or shit btw

Texas, I'm sure it's only a background check but do they just look at that and give the okay? I thought there was an evaluation test to see if you're mentally capable of owning a weapon?

You're thinking of the legislation independent gun owners and democrats have been hounding to pass for decades.
just go to a gun show and buy a gun. No background check. They don't care. Unless you look black/hoodaf nobody is gonna pay any mind.

Backgrounds are required if buying from a pawnshop. As for at gunshows it's because they're personal traders right and require nothing except cash?

probably. i know you just need small background check they do on the spot and a photo id matching your address to go buy from a store like bass pro. my friend for example wasnt able to because his address wasnt updated in the systems but was updated on his ID (might have been opposite idk).
heres what ordering online from basspro looks like https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/online-firearm-purchase-guidelines

It really depends on the state
All require you to be 21 in order to purchase a handgun
Most* cities require said handgun to be registered locally via their sheriff department, you pay a small fee $5-$15 and wait 2 weeks
They run their own background check and some other shit like if you've been arrested ect. They will also add you to their register
once you get an approval letter you can take that to an FFL
Your FFL will then initiate a call to a federal agent usually the ATF who will run a Federal background check while on the line they will say you pass in which the FFL will give you a Form 4473 to fill out.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b1/Atf_form_4473-firearms_transaction_record_5300_9revised_0.pdf
You pay the FFL transfer fee they take a copy of your photo ID and you walk away with your new gun
Note: Most states, I think all, do not allow out of state residents to purchase a gun in their state unless you are in the military. In which you will also have to give them a copy of your military orders and show them your military ID.
There is even more to this process if you are buying a gun from an FFL at a gunshow because they also have to file a federal form for firearm transfer via the ATF in addition the the above.
Source: I've completed this process 4 times in 3 states.
Also note
You do not need to be 21 in order to purchase a rifle (18)
You do not need to have rifles registered in most states like you do with handguns (IE sheriffs department step)
You can avoid all of this by simply just buying an 80% lower online and building your own rifle with tools no need to register anywhere and they will ship everything to your front door
