And to greatsage, you do not put "alayhis salam" before Ali's name if you are not referring to Imam Ali bin Abi Talib (AS)

just wishing peace upon him. Muhammad Ali is not one of the messengers, but he did as instructed and shared the message of God.
It was reported that Abu Hurairah said “When one of you joins a gathering, let him say 'Peace'. When he wants to get up and leave, let him say 'Peace'. The former is not more important than the latter.” (Hasan hadith reported in Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhi)
"You shall not enter Paradise so long as you do not affirm belief (in all those things which are the articles of faith) and you will not believe as long as you do not love one another. Should I direct you to a thing which, if you do, will foster love amongst you: (i.e.) give currency to (the practice of paying salutation to one another by saying) as-salamu alaikum"

yeah you are right, there are varying degrees of respect we must place upon people, our brothers, the Companions (alayhe salaam) of the Prophet (salah Allahu alayhe wa salaam), imams, prophets and messengers, and among some there are those we make no distinction between.
a brother i recently found in my family has passed. he lives now after this dunya, as living a life for Allah; with Allah. and i do not exalt him, or glorify him, but i send him a salutation of peace, as he knows Peace, to whom peace belongs.
may Allah send peace upon you too, akhi, and make us witnesses of the mercy He continually bestows. ma'a salama
the only note is that i'm not sure if he qualifies as a martyr due to, well, me not being the owner of knowledge.
but i'm sure you're familiar with the exceptions to take note of, as i'm not the one to say he went immediately to Jannah.
