				| I know you guys have pretty good taste, so I wonder if there's consensus regarding the best director of the era (let's say, age <= 60). I've got Darren Aronofsky as third, but can't decide between Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson for first place. Thoughts? _________________

				| Nicolas Winding Refn is easily my #1 Ridley Scott
 Harmony Korine

I like Darren Aronofsky's movies, but they're not mind blowing or revolutionary for me. I don't like Tarantino, and I haven't seen a Wes Anderson movie yet, but I plan on doing so

				| You cant talk about the modern movie greats without mentioning Christopher Nolan, who directed Inception and the Dark Night. _________________

				| also shouts out to Lars Von Trier and Jean-Luc Godard who is 84 and still making movies (I know it doesn't fit criteria, but he still has new films)

				| I never really think to give the director a lot of the credit, so I didn't know Nolan produced both of those which were pretty good. I don't know who my favorite director is, but some of my favorites are Seven with Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, Reasonable Doubt with Samuel Jackson, and Shutter Island with Leonardo DiCaprio. I like really suspenseful movies and ones with twists, Shutter Island wasn't the best story, but I was a big fan of the setting because it was pretty eerie. | Clifford wrote: | | You cant talk about the modern movie greats without mentioning Christopher Nolan, who directed Inception and the Dark Night. |

				| Some good feedback here, thanks. I considered Chris Nolan, but his body of work is still kinda' small to be considered as defining an era, IMHO. The same could probably be said about even Paul Thomas Anderson at this point.

I own Bronson, and it's legit. I'll look into the rest of his catalog. Ridley Scott is great, but he's like 80. I assume you're trolling with Korine.

You're right; I should've named Paul Thomas Anderson as third and Aranofsky as fourth.

It would be difficult for me to confidently recommend a Wes Anderson film to someone who hates Tarantino - they are nothing alike, but we must have very different tastes. My favorite is The Royal Tannenbaums. I just saw Moonrise Kingdom last week and it was excellent (maybe a new #2), but seeing the little girl from Harry Potter run around with her clothes off all the time made me uncomfortable.

Although it's true that scripts have more clues than books, a director is pretty much responsible for the translation from print to screen. Their vision comes through in the final product - often so much so that you can easily identify their work without seeing the credits (think Tim Burton, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Ridley Scott). If you can't name a modern director you really like, it may be a reflection of the directors' failure to strike a resonant chord with you. | BreakinGods wrote: | | I never really think to give the director a lot of the credit... |

As an aside, what do you guys think of the original Batman? I think that Tim Burton freaking nailed it. 50% of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight vision came straight out of Burton's rearview mirror.

nolan is good entertainment, but not art. id never consider him era defining. I love the prestige, but not huge on Inception or the batman trilogy

Alright, sorry. This forum has taught me to assume that any statement that isn't obviously true is an attempt at trolling. Sorry - I'll look into Korine.

Also, honorable mention to Doug Liman, Guy Ritchie, Wachowski Bros., Antoine Fuqua, and the Coen Brothers. Fair to say they'll be our go-to guys once the current meta fades.
