that 00000000 part is just a temporary placeholder for the syntax checking

That it won't compile is because there is no mov r32,m8

if you wish to write a 1 byte memory address into edx, and clear the upper bits you must first clear the whole edx register and then set the lowest byte of the edx register

Code:

xor edx,edx //or mov edx,0
mov dl, [stuff]
