Got my ankle wrecked during training... guess I'll visit the doc tomorrow to see what the best course of recovery is. It seems to accumulate lots of fluid, so I might need to keep the pressure off, in which case I need something to walk with.

Actually walked/ran on it for another twenty minutes after it got twisted. Hurt like hell afterwards, but the adrenaline during training made it bearable I guess.

How much time do you commit to this?

I've been wanting to pick up a martial art but I don't know if I have enough time for it.

4 hours a week. Training is spread over three days (tuesday, thursday, sunday). It's pretty intense though, you need to be prepared to have your body beat up every day you train. Last tuesday we fought without gloves, and when we were ground fighting we did so on the solid floor. In the past year and a half I've been doing this I've bruised my ribs, twisted my ankle, ripped a tendon in my hand, had a concussion, and had my lip wrecked several times because I didn't keep my guard up properly. This is aside from the insane muscle pains you'll be having.

Good. Training has become heavier because of the upcoming exam, and I might not be able to participate because of my ankle. Because I'm going for orange, I have to do the exam the yellow belt examinees have to do, plus the exam for the orange belt. All in all that's four hours fighting, which is pretty heavy.

Nice to hear you picked up a sport as well. What made you choose Karate?

You don't remember? I've been in karate about 7 years altogether. I got my blackbelt a couple years ago and I got too busy around last october so I got out. I still go visit every now and then and since summer started, my instructor wanted me to come back and workout again because I'm good fight training for the others. It's only an hour or so Mondays and Wednesdays, but that's all I could fit with work Tues, Thurs, Sat, and Sun. Just trying to keep busy and make summer go as fast as possible.

Sorry man, with all the people and name changes here it's hard to keep track of everything. Nice to be wanted. Don't you tire of having rules during a fight with Karate? Or do you do training alone?

I hate the rules. Every one in a while he'll switch it up and let us do whatever, but still at reduced contact.

I can imagine. Pretty much every week we have at least one or two sparring sessions that last like ten minutes, in which you can pick a partner and go all the fuck out against each other. Punching, kicking, chocking, whatever. Three taps or surrendering means 'stop' though. You often hurt afterwards, but god do you feel alive. I used to be a pretty timid guy when I went out to clubs or pubs, but now I'm always hoping someone calls me out. Never thought I'd turn into that guy.

We get to do some fun contact stuff though, kendo being one of my favorites. Also, when you're in the lower ranks, the instructor trains our shins and forearms with shinai, and we fight using a lot of muay thai leg kicks(It's american freestyle karate/mma), so after so many years, your shins and forearms are nearly dead sensory wise. Its fun to play shins with someone who doesn't know that about you lol.

I really want to find a krav maga trainer near LSU.

Go to http://www.kravmaga.com/locations/licensees-affiliates/krav-maga-worldwide-officially-certified-training-centers/ to find an official training center. Considering your lengthy training and dead shins/forearms you'll pretty much kick the asses of your fellow classmates Very Happy
