It's been a while since I have done pure maths (Used to physics and what not). Need some explanation.

Simplify: (12x^2*4x^3) / (8x^9)

I get

48x^5 / 8x^9 = 6x^-4

Wolfram gives me 6 / x^4

I always thought 6x^-4 and 6/x^4 were the same thing

4((3x^2*x^3)/2x^9) (4 as common multiple)
4((3x^5/2x^9)) (multiply numerator adding exponents)
4((3/2)x^-4) (divide denominator subtracting exponents)
4(6x^-4) (multiply by 4)
(6/x^4) (Flip numerator/denominator)

P.S.: I pulled common factor for common factors sake and you can not do said step, or multiply it back in whenever.

I've been taught that negative powers make 1/x (So 3^-2 = 1 / 3^2)

So it would be 1 / 6x^4
