So I just figured out pointers the other day and I'm trying to find the pointer for the first item spot of your inventory in the game "Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven". I can find the current address but after imputing the value in the assembler instruction (ECX or whatever is between the []) into Cheat Engine and doing a search with hex checked I get zero results back.

Remember that the values in the register are after the instruction is executed. It's possible the instruction changed the values.

Post a snippit of the instructions you're looking at and a snapshot of the register values when you watched them and we can help.

It doesn't look like EAX is being modified after that instruction, so that isn't the issue. Make sure you're searching all memory types when you search for the pointer (e.g. copy on write, write, executable). If you still can't find it scroll up from that instruction see if EAX gets modified before that instruction. If it does, set a breakpoint and step through the code and try search for the value of EAX before it's modified.

If you're still having trouble, you could always try the pointer scanner .

add eax,ecx is a pretty clear indication that it got changed

In this case, the original valuer of ECX will be he offset

Now the problem is trying to find out how ECX got the value

ok after learning the pointer scanner I got lucky with over 3000 result it was the first one. That pointer scanner was intimidating till I found a simple tutorial. Thanks for the help.
