Are there any tools or whatever that let you find out specifically what it is that is making a process/program use up so much of the CPU (e.g. rendering graphics, reading data from files, etc.)?

(it's for a game, if that helps)

You can use profiler tools for the application if they offer connectivity to it. Not many programs will allow it by default. .NET applications can be profiled fairly easy via reflection though.
