I was performing maintenance work on a friend's computer when I found a folder named "PACE Anti-Piracy" in %appdata% . She is not a computer expert and is not one to install random software but I didn't think too much of it and forgot about it the next day. Maybe it was some security or something that came with the computer.

However, a week ago I was cleaning up my computer and junk left by old software left in the temporary folders. I found that exact same folder in my %appdata%. At this point, I was like "What?"

A quick search turned up PACE Anti-Piracy. It seems not only did they place a kernel-level driver on my computer but they also made deceptive registry entries ("soup", "dog", "electron"). Apparently, software companies implemented this for copyright protection. This includes companies such as Adobe and Nero. There was no notice of installing of such software.

I tried to remove all known instances of the software manually by deleting those registry keys and the driver (tpkd.sys). Hopefully there is nothing left.

Just though you guys should know.

Is there not an internet faction against these type of malignant actions? It feels like there should be a website dedicated to information and removal of these type of "software".

There is in fact, that particular faction is also directly related to digital piracy.

History has shown that things like infectious DRM will continue. A few years back the Sony Rootkit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_BMG_copy_protection_rootkit_scandal

Controversy

On January 1, 2006, Boing Boing, a popular technology weblog, alleged that StarForce was malware, citing several problems associated with the protection system, including disk drive performance degradation, weakening of operating system security and stability.[28] A month later on January 31, 2006 the reporter received an email from StarForce, threatening to sue, claiming the FBI had been contacted, and stating that the article was "full of insults, lies, false accusations and rumors".[29] CNET ran a similar story and received a similar email.[30]

On March 5, 2006, a Protection Technology employee posted a link to a torrent search engine for the results of the search for Galactic Civilizations II, a (commercially successful) game developed by StarDock which does not use mandatory copy prevention, as a demonstration of what a lack of prevention can lead to.[31][32] StarForce later issued an apology for this act after it received a great deal of criticism on the Internet.[33]

And yet another offering from Sony - SecuROM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SecuROM
