I'm pretty solid with the hiragana and katakana and now I want to move onto kanji. I haven't really looked into it (A lot of exams coming up soon). I'd like to know if there is a pattern to remembering it or if it is pretty much remembering the symbol for the word.

Nope. You just have to make little notes in your head that can help you remind yourself of them. For the most part you won't have to remember how to write them unless you plan on living or visiting japan for a long time.
