I'm planning to record some lyrics I wrote and create some music to go with them. Now, not being the most musically talented out there, this is the first time I do this and I'd like to know good voice recording/editing software and maybe a good music creation tool (I can't play instruments, so it will all be done through samples, I suppose. I have briefly played with this type of tool before, but yeah, I don't have any particular in depth knowledge about it). If any of you guys have done this before or know something about it, any tips would also be appreciated.

I still love Sony's Acid product line.

You can import loops, resample them adjust pitch, volume, pan.
You can also use Orion Platinum from Synapse. http://www.synapse-audio.com/orionplatinum.php
It is more like a virtual DJ deck than anything else, but it does allow you to create instrumental sounds as well.

Ah, brilliant, I will look into these tomorrow. Are there any similar things specifically designed for voice recording/treatment? Or would you just record and use them with one of these? I assume I will have to do quite the editing if I intend my voice to sound half decent, so voice specific programs would be awesome.

I came to post these exact two answers.. Wiccaan just got here first.
But I can really recommend both. Easy to use and setup, and the result is great.

For vocals though, your biggest problem wont be the software you use, but rather how you record.
You will need a rather specialized room and microphone to get good vocals. Which software you use is more a question of which one you're most comfortable with (personally I like FL studio for its simplicity).

| FL and sonyacid seem to be pretty standard. Personally I use FL but that's just because I like the layout more. And as ipivb has said it is mostly how you record. You need to eliminate background noise and you will need a good mic/cable.

Awesome, thanks for all the replies, guys. I think I'm going to go for Fruity Loops, from what I've heard its the simplest way to go for beginners. In terms of voice, I have a good microphone and a friend of mine has his bedroom fully soundproofed, so I assume that's where I'm going to do it.

Well that doesn't sound suspicious at all :b
But good luck with your project! Will you be posting results here on CEF?

I use a bit of FL to play around with, but I've found ableton to be pretty nice overall when it comes to music creation.

| Also, Haxory' is pretty decent with FL so if you need any help with it I don't think he would mind.

As said, a good microphone and cord is important.
But, while drink the other day, I did notice something. You know how regular microphones will give you popping "p"s and make extremely annoying sounds when you exhale too much?
Put a tissue in front of the microphone, and it will sound exactly the same, but your "p"s wont pop, etc. Professional studios have the mesh thing in front of the microphone, but if you don't have this, you can person with a high concentration of pigment in his skin rig it and use a tissue instead. Works great.
