|
|
I have two routers: Netgear WGT624v3 and a Belkin F5D8230-4. I need to decide which one to install (considering the fact that it will be in another room hidden by a couple of walls) in order to maximize performance and speed.
Also, what does "Pre-N" mean?
Thanks for your help.
EDIT:
Just got rid of Belkin F5D8230-4. Total crap. Went back to Netgear.

Personal opinion: Netgear. Belkin sucks based on experience with their products. If anything get a Linksys if you have the money though.

I networked my dad's house with a couple Netgears repeating, but I would have liked to have used some D-Link N Xtremes.
Between the two, the Belkin is better, but they both aren't the greatest routers. The only reason I'm saying the Belkin is better is because it broadcasts in wireless N. If you have wireless cards that can receive N signals. Now, if all you do is browse the internet and moderate game play, the Netgear will be fine.
I don't care for Belkin because the last one that I had would drop signal constantly. The Netgear ones at my dad's house seem to be running fine. They don't have the strongest signal (hence why I had to repeat them) but they perform fairly well. My neighbor has a Linksys and I can connect to her internet with 3 bars and the router is a good 100-200ft away. I haven't messed around with Linksys much, but I can say if they all perform like hers, I'll be getting some soon.

Considering the fact that the Belkin router has three antennae, would it make sense that the signal would be stronger?

The only reason I'm saying the Belkin is better is because it broadcasts in Wireless N which is an all over stronger and faster signal. Wireless N broadcasts at 5ghz while B/G go for 2.4Ghz. The best thing about Wireless N is that it's harder to have things like wireless phones interfere with it because it broadcasts faster. But as I said before, neither of those routers are good strong routers. If I were you, I'd search for something a little better if you plan to do anything more than just browse the web.

Wireless N does not default to 5GHz as N can also operate at 2.4GHz depending on the router that you get.
Routers right now operate in 3 modes but not all modes are available. The 3 modes are single band, dual band, and simultaneous dual band.
-Single band- all wireless protocol operate at one frequency.
e.g. B/G/N all operate at 2.4GHz
-Dual band- router runs at 2.4GHz or 5GHz. This will be a disadvantage if a user wants to run N at 5GHz, but they can't as they have B/G devices in their home.
-Simultaneous Dual Band- router can run both at 2.4GHz and 5GHz at the same time. This is good if you want to reduce the clutter in the number of wireless devices as your B/G can run on 2.4GHz and N at 5GHz.
Note that 5GHz range is a lot shorter than 2.4GHz. This is why 802.11a which only runs at 5GHz never caught on because it's only limited to one room, as the signal cannot penetrate through walls.
N in the 5GHz range that can is most likely with the aid from MIMO.

On a personal note I;d pick netgear since belkin gave me personal trouble, but a linksys would be the better choice.

I went through one linksys router in three years. I thought it was a pretty good life span, but then i lost another one within 3 months.
I don't recommend you get ASUS either because its giving me problems currently.
I think the best choice is D-link or if your cheap TP-link

How about you try them both each for a week? Record any disconnects and do regular speedtests at the same time every night & literally determine which is better. Just because a brand may be better, doesn't mean every one of it's products aren't defective.

Well my router was the most expensive shit at Best Buy at the time. It generated the speed test result in my signature below.
