Hello. I'm trying to boost the performance on a very old laptop, so I decided to upgrade the RAM. It started out with 512MB, and I bought two 1GB sticks to bring it up to the max supported 2GB. I installed the module under the keyboard, where the old 512MB stick was, and booted the computer up.
Everything worked find, and it recognized there was 1GB of RAM. So I install the second module, and the computer won't boot. No bios, or anything. I get flashing lights, like it's about to come on, and then they just go back off.
I took the 1GB stick that I know works, and replaced it with the possible bad stick, and the computer boots. I took it out, and tried it in the other slot, and the computer won't boot. I then tried it with the other stick, and same thing again. The computer won't boot if any RAM is in the second slot.
What could be causing this? I now know that both sticks are good. They are both 1GB DDR2 200-pin 5300, so that shouldn't be an issue. I know the motherboard can support up to 2GB of RAM, with a max of 1GB per stick, so there shouldn't be any problems. Could it just be that the whole time, the second slot was faulty?

Does the 512 work in the second slot? Try it with 1GB in known working slot and 512 in the second slot.

Nope. At first, I thought it was rejecting it because they were different sizes, which is why I went ahead and ordered 2GB, but it won't boot with two 1GB sticks, or the 1GB and the 512.
