Is it really worth it to buy a cheaper monitor ie I'm buying a 24' monitor, Acer being cheaper than Samsung, is it worth it to go toward Acer?

Plenty of things factor into buying monitors.
Some things to look at are:

LED backlight

Contrast ratio. The higher number here, the better. 1,000:1 is usually what you find though.

How well is the IPS on it (IPS is the solution to when you look at a LCD TV/Monitor the color is bad. Some monitors have horrible IPS and look bad. It'd be nice if you posted a link of the monitors for us to compare them)

Response time. The lower the number here, the better.

Resolution. Chances are a 24" will be 1920x1080 or 1920x1200

Pivots. Some people like to be able to tilt the monitor and turn it without moving the base.

Inputs. HDMI is probably the most popular and Display Port is getting up there now.

I currently have a 24" Samsung. The only reason I got it was because I got it in a combo deal and a Promo code so it took off about $70. It's a nice monitor, but the IPS isn't that great. 2ms response time and 1,000:1 contrast ratio.

IPS is far superior than any other type of panels. It supports true 8bit and its view angles are top notch. So to say IPS looks bad, do you have any idea what you're talking about?
Most monitors at affordable price in the 24" range are TN panels, a IPS at 24" and that immediately sky rockets to $500+

if you are gaming, look for the highest resolution (1920x1080 is my max imo) in the smallest size (like 22 or 21 inches) as less area to scan

Really it depends on your money situation. LEDs are nice for the fact they take up a little less room. The fact that the Samsung has the promo code, I'd probably get that one. 2ms response time is nice and it's only $30 more with that promo code.

Go with the Samsung.

Go with a 1920x1200 monitor, it provides more real estate and doesn't make things look squish. I had a Samsung screen at 1920x1080 and returned that crap and bought myself a Samsung at 1920x1200 and comes with a built in TV Tuner. The difference is huge also 1920x1200 is 16:10, 1920x1080 is 16:9.

I'd say this would be a good start.

It also depends on the brand. Personally I wouldn't touch most Japanese brands with a 20 meter pole, and I stick with brands I know are good, such as LG.

Cheap monitors are still good, but I'd personally go with a quality brand name.

Again, personally I've had no problem with Acer monitors, but I've never had a samsung monitor last longer than 6 months.

Edit: Whoops, tired. 6 months, not 6 minutes. =/

Be sure that you read the fine print on sites like Newegg as well for return policies for monitors and LCDs. Dead pixel polices vary from retailer and warehouse so be sure you know what you are in store for if you get something with dead pixels.

Personal opinion, go with a brand that has a name you know. Acer and Samsung are both well known companies so either would be fine. I personally have a Samsung 24" LCD HDTV and it works great, no dead pixels and got it from Newegg for ~$200 on one of their daily deal things.

Like Nevergreen mentioned, don't go with something from a company you never heard of. You'll land up regretting it probably in the long run.

I'm a viewsonic monitor fanboy.
I have a 24" LED as my main monitor and 24" LCD as my secondary.
Then for my other computers, a couple of 22" LCDs.

The only problem I have with them is that they take awhile to switch between inputs. e.g. DVI to VGA. It takes like 4 seconds, ridiculous.

Yeah, same thing happens with my Samsung. I have my Linux rig and then this one set up to the same monitor. About 3 seconds to switch to the other.
