Is 16 bit emulation not supported by 64 bit architecture because it's impossible or because it's simply outdated?
Can someone also explain to me specifically why 16 bit programs cannot run on a 64 bit OS?

If I'm correct, 16 bit apps relied heavily on dos. Since dos is no longer essential for Windows operation there you go.

This artical does not apply. Most people have made a switch to visa/7 and now 32/64 bit processes mix with each other smoothly. I have no idea about the 16bit but the 32bit and such do not apply. I have never tried 16 bit on w7 x64 nor do I know any 16 bit programs.
Lemme grab my snes.

Wow did you not read the KB?
Quote: | No 16-Bit Code
* No 16-bit code can run, except for recognized InstallShield and Acme installers (these are hard-coded in Wow64 to allow them to work).
* 16-bit Setup bootstraps are not supported.
* 16-bit MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows 3.x utilities will not start. If you attempt to start such a program, you receive a "Program.exe is not a valid Win32 application" error message. |
OPs question was Quote: | Is 16 bit emulation not supported by 64 bit architecture because it's impossible or because it's simply outdated?

| But at the top it clearly says
Quote: | This article applies to a different version of Windows than the one you are using. Content in this article may not be relevant to you.Visit the Windows 7 Solution Center

So if he doesn't have like, xp or 98 then this article does not apply. Way to try and say I dont read when you clearly do not. I said if he has w7/vista this does not apply.

That's if you run the application native through your OS. It's possible there's an emulator that emulates 16 bit applications to do what it should. (eg Dosbox)

Question wasn't about if it would run under 64-bit XP, 64-bit Vista, 64-bit 7, it was if it would run on 64-bit architecture.

No doubt one exists. I'd try other posters suggest for DosBox.
Dosbox Wiki says it does work with 64 bit Vista and Win 7.

16 bit is dead in the water since vista. use dosbox. it's simple and works fine for just about everything.
the native ms-dos subsystem is gone.
