Title sums it up. I want really nice speakers for about $100, max is probably like $130. I'll also need a soundcard to go with it, because I'm currently on a shitty integrated VIA audio chip. I was thinking something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102007 would be good?

Speakers don't have to be from Newegg, by the way, they can be from anywhere. Newegg doesn't even seem to have that large of a selection of speakers.

The sound card you picked does not have a dedicated hardware audio codec.
So it uses the CPU to run audio task.

Can you suggest a better one that's not too expensive?

@Safko, I was kinda looking for 5.1, but would a decent setup be out of my budget?

Most of the good sound cards are near your budget so that sound card maybe your only choice. Asus has some sound cards too but I can't seem to find any additional info on whether their cheap models have a hardware DSP or not.

As for 5.1 speaker setup, you need to place the satellites in the right position to obtain the best audio hearing experience. I've seen some people with 5.1 setups and they place all of the satellites in front of them! If a satellite is for "Rear Right", then you must place that at the rear right!

For this you may need extra money to buy speaker stands or audio extension cables. Can't do that, just buy a 2.1 speaker setup or headphones.
Me personally prefer Cambridge Soundworks. Got a Slim500 from 10 years ago and it will works great!

In that case would something like this be good? I want to know about the sound quality. Saw a set at microcenter, sound very good, and they look amazing as well.

Also, what are the benefits of having a hardware DSP? If it's just that it takes extra processing power, I have a PII X6 and I doubt I use all of those cores at any point in my ridiculous multitasking.

Sweet god, get the Logitech Z-2300. I have those from christmas and They are so amazing especially if you are a bass lover. Great 2.1 system look at reviews for them if you have time, very highly rated. They are over the 100 bucks though, but only by 10 dollars.

If you got them el cheapo speakers then any speaker with a subwoofer will sound amazing. You may have to go back to MicroCenter or Bestbuy and play around with the speakers they have and see which is best for you.
But no matter what, a speaker set must have a option to let you adjust the BASS level, if the speaker you want don't have that option, don't even bother looking at it.

For hardware DSP, it lets your audio card perform the audio task while your CPU can focus on something else. If a sound card uses the CPU for the work, then what is the point of getting a sound card in the first place.

Newegg is ridiculous. ;__; If I lived in America I could've built my PC for £200 cheaper. Economies of scale is so annoying.

I'm always confused by your over-concise posts...are you saying that I should just get the $30 creative card or I shouldn't bother getting one at all?

sound card wise, if you are only hoping to get performance out of it then you're wasting your time / money. only worthwhile if the features appeal to you.

cmss-3d is pretty nice if you have a headset, some other cards will do something similar. it's their equivalent to dolby headphone. creative's drivers are fucking pathetic though.
