DLL injection seems to be very popular these days. Why is this so? Why does DLL injection tend to give you more freedom with the target application versus hacking externally with ReadProcessMem and WriteProcessMem?

It's the lazy man's way of bypassing hack protections

e.g if WriteProcessMemory gets hooked after the game is loaded you can use inject a dll into the process BEFORE it is hooked and then use that dll to access memory without even having to figure out how it is hooked or what is actually going on

Anti-cheats can hook onto anything they feel is necessary to attempt to keep their application safe. If they feel the need to hook onto it because their application has been comprised they will.

In most cases ReadProcessMemory isn't hooked or detected as a cheat though, as long as you do not alter any memory or change access on anything you should be fine.

DLL injection greater increases your chances of being detected as the anti-cheat can detect the DLL being injected. Injection itself (just loading the DLL) can be considered cheating and result in a ban. Most anti-cheats prevent injection or reverse it by unloading any unknown module or just straight out block them from loading all together.
