Intel wrote:
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 31, 2011 - As part of ongoing quality assurance, Intel Corporation has discovered a design issue in a recently released support chip, the Intel® 6 Series, code-named Cougar Point, and has implemented a silicon fix. In some cases, the Serial-ATA (SATA) ports within the chipsets may degrade over time, potentially impacting the performance or functionality of SATA-linked devices such as hard disk drives and DVD-drives. The chipset is utilized in PCs with Intel's latest Second Generation Intel Core processors, code-named Sandy Bridge. Intel has stopped shipment of the affected support chip from its factories. Intel has corrected the design issue, and has begun manufacturing a new version of the support chip which will resolve the issue. The Sandy Bridge microprocessor is unaffected and no other products are affected by this issue.

I can think of cases of "press site reports product flaw fixed before shipping" being a major problem if:
- you are currently an Intel investor,
- you designed said faulty chip, or
- you have been eager to receive your pre-order in time for Valentine's day.

It is a problem, but hey, we've seen worse. I have an nVIDIA 8400M GS, and we know how that went.

Intel's so silly.
They say they're gonna lose around 700 million dollars from this.

300 of it from having to stop production until the error was fixed.

@Trow, it wasn't fixed before shipping.
They have a large number out in the public, thus the recall.

Feel bad for those who have a Sandy Bridge system and those who have parts shipping their way.

For once I'm actually glad that I held off getting SB. I have some major rethinking to do for March now, when I upgrade my machine...

Q3 is when you'll want to upgrade for the higher end SB chips.

Looks like the media has found out too as there was a article in the business section of my local newspaper. The article made a major mistake as it says computers with the recall will say Core i5 and Core i7. But they never specify it was the newer based Sandy Bridge which has the problem not the older Core i5 and Core i7s!

the 6gbit/s sata ports are unaffected.

so if you have some of those to spare you can put off sending it in if you really really are that lazy.

You should write a letter to the editor noting the major error.

Or better yet, rewrite the article with correct facts.
They'll have to say something in the next issue saying their facts were incorrect. Smile

Anandtech wrote:
On its conference call to discuss the issue, Intel told me that it hasn’t been made aware of a single failure seen by end users. Intel expects that over 3 years of use it would see a failure rate of approximately 5 - 15% depending on usage model.
