|
|
hey guys I recently build a new gaming rig I have
I7 950
Asus Rampage III GENE
3 x 2 GB Corsair XMS3 1600 Mhz
and a Color Power HD 6850
from what I am told I should be able to max out about every game I play at 1920 x 1080 however this is nowhere near the case in World Of Warcraft I have matched my friends settings he is using a HD 5850 while I am at 20 FPS hes at 80+ FPS I know that the 5850 has more raw power but not 4x the power of the 6850
I have installed the latest ATI drivers I have tried overclocking but I get the same results just higher temperatures on the card
any ideas?
EDIT : also I forgot to mention when i first built this rig I was using an old HDD with windows XP on it and with 3 Gb of ram I was getting much more out of this card

What kind of power supply do you have? you might not have enough power to the card. But i figure the system would lock up if that happened. How many PCI-E slots do you have? Try putting the card in a different slot.

confirm your card is properly setting its clockspeed in game. for some retarded reason, amd seems unable to completely solve this issue.
also check your cpu temperatures, it will seriously scale back speeds if your temperatures are too high.

you probably eat most of the performance cost of shadows redrawing geometry and extra draw calls. your gpu is effectively eating the geometry costs for that entire shadow caster again.
high shadows are much friendlier on performance than ultra and you really won't spot the optimizations unless you're looking for them.

The HD5850 is high-end and HD6850 is mid-range.
Here is a WoW benchmarking article. Includes GTX 580, HD6850, and all way to down to a 8500GT.
