| Aside from DVI usually being a bit crisper, using it instead of VGA lower/improve performance in games (even if it's negligible)? Thanks in advance, it's one of the things I don't pride myself in having very much expertise in.

| If you have, it use it. I'm pretty sure it won't make your games preform any less. Not sure about more, but never the less, they will preform at least the same.

Ok, heres some basic facts.
VGA deliver analogue signal, and DVI deliver digital signal.
In analogue signal, the quality of the cable will make huge difference, since they are effectively send 'rippling' data.
While in Digital, the signal is just 0 or 1. Cable quality won't be that much of a problem.
To answer your question, if your monitor is really close to your tower, it wont make any difference that you can compare. Unless you use REALLY crappy VGA cable.

also one added effect of dvi is that you don't have to adjust the sizes manually on your monitor. (e.g sometimes it's shifted too much to the left or bottom and then you have to use the monitor controls to adjust it)
as for speed it won't make any difference

VGA has a higher supported resolution than DVI
DVI is capped at 60Hz
DVI has two types, single link and dual link
Single link are used for monitors up to resolutions of 1920x1200
Dual link are used for monitors up to 30"--2560x1600.
DVI cables plays a role too as if you use a single link DVI cable on a 30", you won't be able to run the screen in its native resolution.
