Incidentally, it's for CAD, whose processor fried.
For those of you that don't know him, he's a moderator, so any help you could provide would be great.
He requests recommendations from these sites.

AM3 fits in AM2 though. So technically wouldn't this fit and be fine?

I'm pretty sure that it's only AM2+ and AM3 sockets that AM3 cpus are compatible with.
edit
Actually I'm retarded, you were right. The 545 isn't a bad cpu, either. But even though the new cpu will physically fit in the am2 socket doesn't mean it will be compatible with your motherboard. Check to see if your bios can support a 545, if it can, you're all good.

The original processor you got "AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 4400+ " uses socket 939.
Socket 939 is obsolete. You will need to upgrade your system if you want a newer CPU.
Time to get a new computer!

Think again. The original "4400+" was a socket 939 toledo core which ran at 2.2 ghz and had 2x1 mb l2 cache. Then when AMD released the Brisbane architecture, they released a new athlon 64 of the same name, 4400+, but at 2.3 ghz and 512 kb l2 x 2. The new 4400+ was also for am2, and CAD has the new version.

Didn't catch the speed on CAD's proc. and yes the 4400+ running at 2.3GHz is indeed socket AM2.
Looking at AMD's site, there are six 4400+ CPUs.
4 of them for socket AM2
2 of them for socket 939
The G1 has a max temp of 72 while revision G2 has a lower max temp of 68

Too bad it's not a bit older, I have either a 939 or 959 sitting at home, can't recall which atm. I'd give it to him.

According to David my Mobo can't run the AM3 processors. ]: He told me to get a new mobo+processor.
