|
|
Hello, in my household we have five computers connected to the internet and i have managed to figure out that for some reason, one of my desktops is slowing down the whole network immensely, to a point that i cannot play some online games. I have done safemode anti-malware scans and anti virus scans, but they come up with nothing and the issue still exists, whenever that computer is connected to the network. Anyone have any idea what is going on here?

Is the problem fixed when you turn the said computer off? And what are the specs of the said computer, is it old and slow?

We talking wireless network? DSL, or cable, or dialup. More info about your network will go further to getting a useful answer.
If it is an older machine it could be that the network card is 10/100 in which case any device you have that is 10/100/1000 will never reach that 1000 speed. Your network is as fast as the slowest device on it.

I know i'm not dialup, but i don't know the difference between dsl or cable it's not wireless though, and i'm not talking about the machine itself, i am talking about the machine slowing down the entire network, so that on a different computer it's impossible to play things like World of warcraft. This only happens when the computer is connected to the internet.

Right, your network is as slow as the slowest device connected to it. Read the link I posted earlier. Your only options are to replace the network card in it, or if it is using sub standard cat5 you could try replacing that computers cable.
DSL goes through a phone line, cable goes through coaxial cable.

This has only been happening for the past week or so, and we have had the computer connected to the network for the last couple of months.

Maybe the wire connecting your computer to the internet is fucked, change them.
It's happened at my place a couple times.

Agree with Nevergreen. If it's only occurred recently, start with trying a different cable, move from there.
Also this one computer, what is running on it? OS, build version, Service Pack number? What kind of software is it running?

Make sure you don't have any game downloaders installed. They will often be P2P and continue to seed your game data to other people. An excellent example is Pando Media Booster. It even adds itself to startup and will gladly use all of your bandwidth without you knowing.

How'd you knew which one of the PC's causing the issue?
Does the problem persist when that unit was turned off?

Tried something like replacing your NIC?
If that unit has a built-in NIC, disable it in the BIOS and insert a discrete NIC and try it.
