|
|
For the past years AMD unlike Intel, had kept its socket in order to be compatible with generations of CPUs it had released. This was one of the reasons why people use it, to prevent the need for a new motherboard just because of a new CPU.
This is about to change...
While this may be old news to some of you guys, according to the web, AMD's upcoming Bulldozer CPUs will require a new socket! :O
The socket will be AM3+ and the reason for this decision was conducted in a interview, which says:
Quote: | "When we initially set out on the path to Bulldozer we were hoping for AM3 compatibility, but further along the process we realized that we had a choice to make based on some of the features that we wanted to bring with Bulldozer. We could either provide AM3 support and lose some of the capabilities of the new Bulldozer architecture or, we could choose the AM3+ socket which would allow the Bulldozer-base Zambezi to have greater performance and capability," the official said. |
So when Bulldozer arrives and you guys want one, it's also time to get a new board, but the good news is, socket AM3+ will be compatible with older CPUs like Phenom II.

I don't think it'll be much of a problem; they produce tons of CPUs that fit the old slots that will be sufficient for a long time to come. Looks good!

Not a big deal. AM3 has been in use for a long time, whereas Intel produces a new socket every 5 minutes.

Intel has only made eight desktop sockets, AMD has made ten.

What you seem to be forgetting is that CPU's that are AM2, AM2+, AM3 and AM3+ will all be compatible with the new socket, whereas Intel releases a new socket (that's usually not compatible with previous gens) for almost every generation of CPU's they release.
Also, you didn't list LGA 1156 & 1366, which are soon to be ditched for sandy bridge later this year.
Alsoalso, sandy bridge seems to have 2 different sockets.
Balls.

Wrong!
Intel kept their socket 775 for quite some time until the release of Nahalem which introduced a socket change.
What Intel did that forced users to get a new board is due to chipset incompatibility. If you got a socket 775 board with a Intel 945P chipset, you cannot use any of the Core 2 series CPUs, but a new chipset are compatible with older CPUs.
Some board makers decided to modified the chipset, which in then has the compatibility of using it (Core 2s).
LGA 1156 by far is the shortest lived socket.
LGA 1366 still has some life left, but not for too long.
