I saw a couple threads back about a guy ranting about the evils of CE as he got banned from WoW. Now, I know WoW has the mother of all security systems but I also know that there are hacks for WoW. So, how exactly does WoW detect hacks? Does WoW hook winapi and react whenever it's targeted by say readprocessmemory? I'm looking into hacking FFXIV now, and while I'm fairly certain SE is incompetent in it's ability to create security, I'm still curious as to what potential red flags would be.

So then, question of the day: How do games detect and prevent cheats?

Now that You mention, I saw that post too. Smile

I am not a wow player but as I have seen on the net, they are using wpe pro to edit packets. I don't have a single clue if it works or not.

There was a topic about anti-cheat detection methods here:
http://forum.cheatengine.org/viewtopic.php?t=506926

And I bet You will find some more if You check out the topics.
And again, I have no clue about wow, I just wanted to point You to this general topic because it seems to be useful.

WOW players will most likely know the exact answer.

World of Warcraft uses a hack detection system known simply as the Warden. It monitors process space, path, and various other CRC integrity checks.
The Warden has the ability to see everything you have installed on your computer however it doesn't do this as there was a legal dispute about it. It also can monitor running processes.
The Warden sends checks the client constantly for any memory alterations. It also runs a check for all known hacks. There are several other methods they use in protecting their game.
