I think the average computer costs $4 a month to run 24/7, which basically means you can spend $4 a month on hosting if you build your own server.

The ftp and the shell access are unecesary. Once you have samba in place it will act link a windows share, you can drag and drop files into it.

For a local hosting yes, but to share it out on the web no. Most ISP's block port 80 outbound.

And if you want to host it to the web there are more steps than outlined above.

You can host a website on your computer with Windows.

You need a webserver www.apache.org has a Windows binary.
You possibly need a database www.mysql.com has Windows binary.
And possibly a server side interpreter to handle database lookups, php handles this quite nicely. www.php.net also has Windows binaries.

Just when you configure your apache server change the default port to 8080 instead of 80. You could try to host through port 80, but it most likely will not work.

Who is your ISP?

Why 8080?

I agree, a windows based server is the best, but this guide helps on the topic of building a physical server.

Download those 3 apps that I posted. That's all you need. If you need someone to configure it for you, and don't get offended, but you don't need to be running a web server. Chances are you will end up getting your box rooted from it.

And I say this, because you need to know what options there are. EX: PHP allow to display errors, should be off, why, well they will by default goto the php-err.log, if you display them, then whatever the error an attacker knows something about your site, database version, web server version, mysql version, possibly mysql database names, or values.

I'll tell you 'DROP TABLES' will ruin your day, quick.

Of course we went way off topic, OP posted howto for File Server not a web server.

Don't do this as all ISPs do not allow a server to be hosted on a residential line. Enjoy your blacklisted service.

I've hosted one more than 5 years now. Never been blacklisted.
