I was thinking of saving for a cheap computer to use as a server from home. But the only problem I'd have is the power uptime. My house is prone to having short power outages, ranging from 1 to 30 minutes. I'd need some sort of backup power. I'm hoping a standby generator isn't the only choice, cause those are pretty damn expensive.
Any ideas?

I'm not sure if anything else is really needed to have a server as far as hardware goes, but if so, I'm all ears.

That's perfect! Thank you!
I've never seen, or heard of, those. Exactly what I'm looking for.

Just FYI: UPS units aren't meant to replace power from the wall. They are just meant to give you some spare time to properly turn off certain delicate devices.

For UPS Math: Consider what devices you will attach to the UPS. Add the Wattage of all the devices together (Listed on the back of all AC power devices. DC power devices list volts and amps. DC Volts times DC amps are Watts) and devide the total Watts by 120 (voltage from the wall). This number is your Amps per second draw.

When considering a UPS unit, make certain the total wattage of all the devices to be connected to it is less than it's wattage rating, or else it will just be a very expensive surge protector (it won't make more power than it can generate and won't work period). Then, consider the VA rating. Devide the UPS VA rating by your Amps per second drain and you'll get the number of seconds it will power your devices. Divide by 60 for minutes.

You'll be shocked at just how short it lasts.
