What do you think is? If you were to ask me I would say C++/C# along with Java.
Give you reasons why, the strong points of the language and the bad points.
I'm thinking of taking up C++, getting a tutor for it; already have a book. (I can probably only do minor things in C++).
But then again there is C# what seems to be the next generation of programming etc.

I think one of the hardest things for anyone making a game with images (and they aren't a gfx artist) is simply making the images/sprite sheets/textures.

In case you don't already know about it

Very good community, used to have Beginer, Mid-level, Advanced programming challenges. Was fun to post code for peer review, and look at others solution to the problems.

| With C++ you have access to a variety of headers / library files that can help you get the job done.

There is no best, there are just simply preferred or recommended based on the platform you plan to develop for as well as plan to develop for in future versions or ports of your game(s).
Different languages have different libraries and support for various engines such as OpenGL, DirectX, and SDL.
Overall choice is based on your needs.

| Java would be good; it's not too difficult (very similar to C#/AS3) and pretty much runs on any platform so you can target a larger audience. PLUS you can make an applet if you want an online game as well as a downloadable one!
