Well today at school me and my friends had a argument about what a cardigan is, so i decided to ask CEF for help on what a cardigan is a jacket or a jumper

Having experience in the matter, it's more like a jumper. A jacket typically has a zip up the front. Cardigans do not.

They're usually pretty thin and don't offer much protection from the cold.

There are two types of cardigans. There is one that is like thermals, skins etc. and another that is like a jacket (with buttons). They provide little protection from the cold, and are worn as fashion statements.

a cardigan is a lightweight sweater that either buttons or zips in the front or is just open in the front but is not a pull over hope it helps.

Neither. It is a cardigan. Meaning that it has its own name for a good reason.
