So I have W7 on my laptop, and since I've got it it's been bugging me about activating it, which I've tried doing but the key in the jewel case won't work.
There's also a Certificate of Authentication on the jewel case, so it's not a fake copy.

Every time I start my laptop up it has a black screen with a window saying that I have to do activate now, and if I click cancel it just starts ups normally, except it gets rid of my wallpaper.

And if I set another one, after about 10 minutes I will find that it has gone blank again.
What can I do?

Where did you get your Win7? You might have been scammed (partially), as those M$ tags are not that hard to counterfeit.

You can try activating Win7 by phone, where you'll usually have to deal with some underpaid cranky Indian from their support center. But hey, it's better than nothing...

I got it from a tech that fixed my laptop when it had a corrupt registry.
The overall amount that we paid him paid for a copy of Windows 7.

You need to call him and get him to fix it. It sounds like you got scammed. You could report him to I think. Not sure how PC illegal actions are handled. By that I mean, do you call the cops, or a bureau of investigation?

Cops, and I'll go back to see him whenever I can, I doubt he'll be there on weekends.
And if he charges us for him to fix it, I will hate him for all of eternity.

Although the problem may lie in the laptop's past, because before it went to the techs it had a cracked W7 on it, and I think that was the source of the corrupt registry.
But that shouldn't be the case because he installed Vista, wiped it, did a clean install of W7, I'm not sure of the exact steps.

Then do you have a key? and a reformat disc? If thats the issue a reformat with the legit key should fix it.

Of course I have a key, he did give me a physical copy of W7 after all.
And would reformating wipe my laptop?

thats the general Idea, yes. By doing a clean install, any issues would be removed and the key would sit better. If its a legit key it will work fine. You said it was once cracked w7, so its possible that the remains are causing problems.

It would be a lot more convenient if I didn't have to reformat, but thanks for your help.

A cracked W7 will not affect a legit copy of it because if you have a legit copy and don't activate within its time frame, you're too technically using a "crack" copy.

There are some laptop with w7 preinstalled and user gets a "this product is not activated" error even though it's already pre-activated in the factory.
MS has a hotfix for that.
