i have fuckload of Cheetah 15k drives laying around collecting dust, but i won't spend more than my computer just to power those damn drives.

Unlike SATA where you can only connect one drive per SATA port, some SAS controller has a port multiplier. This lets you use multiple drive onto a single SAS port.

Stupid question, will pcieX 1 be bottlenecking? it is better off buying a PCIE X4?
Also@Swatz
Newegg doesn't have really a lot of controller, and most of the time the shipping cost more than the controller itself, let alone the tax.

According to the web PCIe x1 is rated at 5Gbps (2.5 up/2.5down), assume the SAS you got is rated at 3Gbps then think what happens if got more than one drive.

Sell for $250 ea, $2,500, get a nice SSD instead and still have a bunch of money left (depending on how nice of an SSD you want to get).

Those super hard drives aren't getting kind of obsolete-ish (for lack of a better word). They're expensive, use a lot of power, and hot. An SSD is faster and gets rid of two of those problems.

A PCI-e 1x slot maxes out at 250MB/s, those drives have an average sustained read speed of 156MB/s, so that interface would bottleneck with even two drives.

How many drives do you have total?

SSD are not yet ready for the work environment as the SSD home user get are MLC not SLC. MLC's life are half of SLC and due to its expensive price and small capacity. A mechanical drive right now is still the prefer choice.

Also SAS are not obsolete-ish. Them Seagate 15K.7 are them newest where there is another version has onboard encryption.

Them 15k.5 are pretty good, but those 15K.6 has a weird tick while idle...

Most manufacturers have tips and tweaks on their forums that help increase SSD lifespan by a lot. Plus, he can get an SLC if he wants to, he'd have $2,500, which is plenty to get a decent size at a good speed. Besides, I don't know if he's putting these in a work environment or not.

And yes I know they're not obsolete-ish, or anything sort of that. I'm having a real hard time getting the right word.

Why are their SSD? Because idiots want it as they can brag how fast their computer are! OMG look at my PC, it's smoking fast as I got myself a SSD!
I can be part of someone special because I have a SSD. I can also drink black coffee and no one will look at me in a weird way because I have a SSD. Now I can find myself a hot girlfriend because I have a fast computer and it's all because of my SSD!!!!!

Come back when you can find a SSD drive with the same capacity as them 10x SAS drive at around the same price or better. 500GB MLC $1,400, and with $2,500 that's barely enough for 2 of them

10x SAS 300GB = 3TB of storage space.

I never said you'd get the same amount of space, and I openly acknowledged that they're more expensive than SAS. But they're also faster, quieter, and cooler. Not to mention the horrid amount of power that 10 SAS drives would consume compared to the tiny amount of power SSDs consume. The only downsides are the lifespan and price, but the lifespan is still long enough (on most) to run strong for plenty of time, and again he'd have $2,500, which is plenty to get a good SSD.

For example, this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227518.

512GB, already bigger than my hard drive which I can't seem to find enough stuff to fill. But then there's 850MB/s sequential read speeds and 800MB/s sequential write speeds (sustained write is 500MB/s). Plus it'll run for 1,000,000 hours (114 years), and a 3 year warranty. And it's OCZ, so you know you're getting a good product.

edit: Or, two of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227497, but a single one of the first is better

You won't get nearly what they're worth anyway, there's no demand for them.

As much as you might to justify it, you'll never utilize what one SAS drive or SSD will put out, let alone ten. I would just sell all but one for what you can get now, before they depreciate any more, and get a cheap SAS controller, and bank the rest of the money.
