Such as two computers, or a computer and a console? With what sort of adapter would make that possible? Does such an adapter exist?

Well, unless you have a monitor with only one kind of connector, it's very easy and you don't even have to buy one of those things that they mentioned. For example, my monitor has a VGA and a DVI slot. Plug one thing in the VGA, and one in the DVI, and you can switch through on your monitor.
