I want a new gaming machine. Here's the catch - I don't want to build it myself, I want a pre-build that I can stick my graphics cards in. I've not really got the time to do a self build due to work and stuff, plus since it's actually what I do at work I can't enjoy it. That and I seem to always end up RMA'ing something that's arrived dead - I guess it's just bad luck.

I've got a pile of top-end DDR2, currently 8GB of PC6400 and another 8GB of PC8500. I need at least 8GB in my machine, since I run a lot of VMs. I also have a pair of GTX260s. There's pretty much two schools of thought here:

1) Sell the RAM, get a new board and some DDR3 with an i7.
2) Keep the RAM, go for a high-end Core 2 Quad on a DDR2 board.

I think I can get about £150 for the RAM. My total budget is £400, or £550 if I go for option 1 and sell the RAM. I can take the graphics card out of the pre-build machine and sell it, but remember that prices are pretty low on boxless hardware.

So here's the list of specs I need:
    Must have onboard wired LAN.
Needs three spare usable PCI slots at least (one for WLAN, one for sound card, one for USB card).
Total amount of RAM needs to be 8GB at least.
No monitor / keyboard / mouse needed.
Must be from a site in the UK! GBP only.

Cheers Smile

If you're staying with Intel, go for the i7, though I'd go with AMD.

He could get an i5 and stay with intel. You don't need the highest end core to game.

... There's no "need" in gaming.

Exactly, so if he wants to intel fanboy, all he needs is an i5 tops.

the 3 pci slots thing will be hard to find. (best is usually 2)
Are you sure you need a seperate usb card and not an on-board usb controller ? And/or a mainboard with WLAN build in ?

Its easier to just have a usb splitter. They sell them at like walmart for 15 bucks.

What if he had USB devices that are high powered? Then it would be useless.

I have about 40 USB devices, about half of which are external storage. I've got a couple of hubs in there, but I need the USB card otherwise I just don't have the USB bandwidth to support my devices at a reasonable speed. I could deal with onboard WLAN, as long as I get onboard wired LAN too.

I'd much prefer to get an i7 than an i5, since I do a lot of stuff other than gaming that requires a high end CPU - video/audio encoding, rainbow table generation, etc. I could deal with an i5 if I really had to, but only if my budget really couldn't stretch to an i7.

to be honest, i don't think ~550 euro can net you a i5, i7 build, unless you use a low end GPU.

To be honest, you can't even build a computer with everything you want it to do for that budget, much less buy a prebuilt with all that stuff.

/facepalm. How bout you grow a brain for a second, think about its power needs, and then plug it into its own port? Then plug the non hardcore power usage into the usb splitter, like your Ipod and such? HURRRRRRRRR

Max draw is 5v anyway, who the fuck ever uses 40 usb devices at same time?
bluetooth adapter
external drive
mouse
keyboard
pmp
kamera
sd card adapter
arcade stick/ game controller
cell phone
printer
usb power chargers for DS/PSP?
fucking impossible to have 40 usb devices at same time, just impossible.
Maybe fucking 40 hard drives in a raid5 +1 set up or something.

I only use 4, and that includes my xbawx controller. The rest get switched on the fly.
