you coulda have i5 or 955BE easily if you have Microcenter or FRY's around

Cut back on the case and RAM and get an 925/945 instead of a 555.

No need, since you can unlock with that motherboard. I have it, and as a test a few weeks ago I popped in the athlon x2 from my sister's pc, and it unlocked it to quad core with ease.

You could just go with DDR2 and get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227267
You'd just have to find a different motherboard, however they'll probably be cheaper than DDR3 motherboards (in general, obviously there are ten billion other things that factor in too).

Some dual-core CPUs are actually the exact same as their quad-core equivalent, just with two of the cores disabled.
i.e. A Phenom II X2 ### is the exact same as the Phenom II X4 ###, but with two disabled cores. To use these cores, you have to have a cracked bios, which, if you do something wrong, you can completely kill your motherboard. Additionally, it could simply not work. Pros? You get four cores when you paid for two.
IMO, not worth it.
