Cyclic Redundancy Check. CHKDSK gets stuck on the second stage.
Any ideas? +rep if I can recover the files.

Boot into a Linux LiveCD and see if it can access the files on the hard drive.

You might have gotten some bad sectors, usually you can't repair bad sectors. You might want to shop around for a new HD if that is the case

There are certain programs to actually recover files at cases like these. Definately not all but with a bit of luck you've only damaged a section that's hardly used. Google around as I can't remember the name of the program atm. Don't give up until you've tried though, and if you can't find the program - turn it in & let a professional take a look at it as he's almost certain to have programs like these.

Legitimate data recovery costs way too much to be worth a few torrented movies and an iTunes library. Unless you know a guy real well or the company is at fault (eg. Seagate's fantastic firmware on larger drives).

I will exhaust all other possibilities before wasting half an hour on the phone with a customer service rep @ 2 kina/minute

And that's all that's on it...
I have tried CHKDSK N: /f a few times, the first few took 12+ hours, and now it completes in about 30 minutes. This was my friends recommendation: "Run CHKDSK /f about 30 times, then CHKDSK /r a couple". At current I can see everything, which is alot better than before, but once I start a copy it only does ~2mb before stopping and saying it can't read from source file.
