I believe it was rumored to be the i9.
I too thought it was the i9 until recently.
Personally, I wish there was the i5's as average users, i7's for gamers, and a new i9 series specifically 6 cores for hard core gamers/overclockers.

No one even needs a quad core for gaming though. Most games still dont utilize multi core.

You make it sound as if they all do which is wrong. They sure as hell will not need a 6 core cpu. Not every new game needs a quad, not even a majority.
