The small graphic difference between the GBA and the graphics of the DS was why the DS was made. The small difference between the DS and 3DS will be exactly the same, if not worse, considering it needs a 3D engine to run.

Are you trying to say that the film on the screen makes the ds more powerful?

Pretty sure it just uses something similar to sterescopic 3d where there is 2 "screens" overlapping each other to simulate 3d. Thats all I know, really, so don't quote me on it.

No, the hardware itself has to be more powerful in order to simulate 3D.

How powerful is the 3DS?

Nintendo has not revealed any specs for the 3DS system beyond the basics and size/shape, but expect it to well surpass the Nintendo DS in visual and processor capabilities. To provide stereoscopic 3D effects the system must have the ability to render each game field twice, one for each of the player's eyes, a technique that will require significant horsepower to produce.

Japanese company Digital Media Professional (DMP) revealed that it is the company that's providing the graphics processor for the 3DS. The system is using the PICA200 graphics core, a chip designed for use in mobile phones, amusement machines, and game consoles. The architecture uses DMP's proprietary "Maestro Technology" to achieve high quality visuals with minimal power dissipation.

Several developers that have experienced 3DS in its current form have reported, off the record, that it has processing capabilities that exceed the Nintendo Wii, and with 3D shaders they can make games that look close to current generation visuals on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on the lower resolution screens.

Off the record information from developers working on the system have indicated that Nintendo 3DS will pack not one, but two 266MHz ARM11 CPUs, along with a 133MHz GPU, 4MBs of dedicated VRAM, 64MBs of RAM, and 1.5GBs of flash storage.

The 3DS device is not using the NVIDIA Tegra mobile chipset, a rumor that's been floating around since 2009.

However, it seems that the games will be backwards compatible with the DSi, not sure if it is the case with DSL and the original NDS.

Is the 3DS backward compatible?

The 3DS will be backward compatible with the Nintendo DSi. To ensure compatibility, the system retains the internal and external cameras of the Nintendo DSi and has the ability to download software straight to solid state storage inside the handheld, as well as feature the standard D-pad and buttons input, touch screen functions, and microphone. And, of course, it has the two screen display.

Standard DS games will not have the ability to be displayed in stereoscopic 3D on the 3DS. DS games will likely only be displayed in standard 2D. Just as the Nintendo DSi removed the Game Boy Advance slot from the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite design, there is no GBA cartridge slot on the 3DS.
