Take out the CMOS battery. (PC also has to be unplugged? not sure on that part)

You don't need one to see if you're getting to/past POST.

http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm

your internal speaker should beep when you're booting up.

if you don't have a case speaker, you definitely want to buy one so you can listen to the post beep(s). it's like a dollar.

your mobo also might have some lights on it to tell you if your shit worked or not.

try removing a stick of RAM and playing with the RAM setup.

your PSU is probably fine, GPU is probably not the problem either if you can't POST without it. at this point i'm leaning towards the actual mobo. if it's just shutting off that fast, it's probably not bad heatsink contact -> overheating.
