Does hyperthreading make a huge difference when you're gaming and using CPU intensive software?

I'm going to build my own computer soon, and I'm on a budget of around $1000.

I want this PC to last as long as possible, at least 4 years, preferably 6 years, without needed too many upgrades.

Should I wait a few more months and save up a bit more money to pay for the i7, or should I just buy now and take the i5?

Always wait and save if you can wait and don't need a pc desperately.
It allows you to buy better hardware for same price or the same hardware for cheaper.
Intel Core i9 is coming. When they are released, the i7's will presumably get cheaper, or if you can afford it, get an i9.

i9 is going to be so expensive when it comes out.

I'm already crossing that off my list.

And even if I wait, I still need to know whether or not the i7 is worth it. If it's not, I'll just grab the i5, and use the extra money to get more RAM, or a better graphics card.

i5 isnt that bad compared to an i7. Its the little brother. It has potential. I'm not personally a huge lover of intel, but unless you plan to do some massive shit, like rendering, I dont think you need the i7 that badly.

if you dont have a microcenter nearby then pricematch it at bestbuy. you save $50.
they also have the i7 for about 200.

What kinds of CPU-intensive software are you going to use? Stuff like CAD and video transcoding can greatly benefit from HyperThreading.

Yea thats what I'm saying. You don't need an i7 unless you plan to do some heavy shit. Like rendering 3d images and what not. I talk to gogodr about this kinda crap. He says it takes like an hour to render a piece at a time. So get an i7 if you wanna do that kind of intense stuff.

I might do some CAD two years when I get into uni.

I'm trying to be a civil engineer, and the teacher said we might do CAD for drafting and what not.

Currently, though, I don't have a lot of intense things to do, except gaming, but as I said before, I don't really want to do many upgrades in the future.

I'm hoping that this computer will be able to last me until I graduate from Uni.

If you do not plan to do intense shit for a while, id hold off a bit and wait for the new i processor. I guess the i8? The i7 will drop in price and still be a decent cpu.

so throwing this out here:
1156 socket:
dual channel memory only, very picky about ram
extreme overclock can cause real damage (http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3661)
the 1156 is out of the feature, only i3,i5,i7,
if you really want those cool features and better i7,i9
triple channel
what's that PCIE thing different called?
then go with the 1366 i7

I'm pretty sure the only i* series processors Intel has planned for at the moment are the i3, i5, i7 and i9. The i9's supposed to be getting released early next month.
