I don't believe you can change back to your original operating system through a system restore, best bet would be to look for the XP cd and product key that came with the computer

But i could be wrong, wait for some more educated opinions from people like elpacco or slovach.

You'd need to wipe Vista from the drive and reinstall windows XP, UNLESS the original installation of XP (pre built pc) came with a partition for a system backup (bad wording here, sorry) and you didn't wipe that partition when you installed Vista.. but I doubt that's the case.

Some prebuilt computers has a "restoration" harddrive that allows you to reset your OS to the time of manufacturing.

First of all, is your computer custom-built or prebuilt?

If it's prebuilt, then I'm pretty sure it comes with a recovery disk.
Use that to reformat your whole computer back to normal.

Short answer: no.

You could try and upgrade it to Windows 7 though, which would save you the hassle of backing up your stuff at the cost of a few hundred dollars and 3-5 hours of time.
