I want to get an DVI to HDMI wire. If I get a wire that is described as HDMI to DVI will it work both ways?

It won't work vice versa.

It depends on the male/female connectors and which side they're on the connectors and your input/output devices. If you're using this for a multimedia system, you'll need an additional sound jack (3.5mm) or use something like S/PDIF.

My friend hooked up his laptop with a HDTV. Not sure if it was DVI->HDMI or VGA->HDMI, but he is using an adapter, and it's working just fine
