Because I currently have four (see attached pic).

There is absolutely NO problem deleting any of those $ files and/or dumping the prefetch folder. I do it at least once every day and before doing a Ghost backup, to save space.
I've read the so called Experts on emptying the Prefetch folder and to me it's just so much feldercarb.
Back to Explorer.....
My software guru says that there should only be one explorer.exe and that will be in the windows folder. Any other is most likely a Trojan/Virus.
Delete all except the one in your windows folder.
I just did a search on my own Xp system and found only one in the windows folder.
It's common for Viruses and Trojans to name themselves Explorer.exe.
Good Luck,
The Shadow |

Delete all of them, open 1 new.
Restart computer, and check if it still has 4.

They were all in C:/Windows
I terminated all of them, and one started up (automatically).

What Windows Version are you running?
What anti-virus do you have installed?

Just your Windows operating system doing something strange and undocumented. Nothing to worry about.
