You shouldn't worry too much about compatibility. However, if you have specific programs in mind you might as well do google searches for each specifically. XP Mode (not in Home Premium, I think) is really only to accommodate companies using very old software. If anything you use regularly would have to be run in XP mode, there's plenty of room for a free upgrade to different software.

I'm guessing that instead of games being made compatible with Windows 7, Windows 7 was made to be compatible with games. So far I haven't heard of any problems from people.

Like I said, in the meantime you can google around and make sure. You'll probably be fine.

The compatibility for windows 7 vs xp is flawless. I played games on build 7600 beta and I had little if any problems.

Compatibility is fine.

Everything works.

Also, just purchase another GB of RAM. Memory sticks are painfully cheap nowadays.

ddr2 is. ddr3 is like 40 bucks for 1gb. Ive looked on newegg, tiger direct, global, they all sell at about 85 bucks for 2gb of ddr3. Thats a bit painful on a wallet.

His other stick is DDR2 anyways. Why would he go for DDR3?

1GB of DDR2 RAM is like 10 dollars. There was even a deal on Patriot 1GB RAM sticks where you could get them for free.

15 dollars at newegg and a 15 dollar mail in rebate. So basically you paid for shipping and taxes.

Anything that runs on Vista runs on Win7 for the most part, as in including anything a normal everyday computer user would have. The only exceptions would be certain programs that use certain resources in the operating system which, of course, changed from Vista to 7.

Everything that worked with vista (for me)works with 7 (so far) and everything that worked with XP works with vista (for me).

Get at least 2GB of rams if you're going to use Win7.
1GB is enough though.
