Is there any real competition? Is one better than the other? Or is it just a matter of what you like?

Lots of people would say that proprietary operating systems are the way to go (you can play Crysis on them!), but one of the main reasons to use Linux is because it's free software -- you can get the original source code and change it. It's all about philosophy on that front. And for most (non-hardcore gamers), anything they might need from their computer is available through free software alternatives (or I suppose some proprietary pieces of software for Linux, like Flash player, graphics drivers).
