|
|
My computer recently got infected with Windows Police Pro, a fake antivirus that will execute itself on startup, disable all windows applications and gives you fake virus notices. It blocked all the programs, wouldn't allow taskmanager, etc etc etc.
Anyways, I used Safe Mode and did scans with Malwarebytes, deleted the Windows Police Pro directories, and fixed my registry problems, and rebooted normally. Now Windows Police Pro seems to have been erased. Task manager is working, all my applications are working, with the exception of Internet Explorer.
Can anyone help with this? And please don't say 'Get a different browser', because that defeats the purpose of this topic.
I do use Firefox as my default browser, but my mother is a real-estate agent, and one of the websites she uses is IE-compatible-only.

I don't know about the specific problem, but I'm fairly certain that if you were to go to the Microsoft download page and re-install Internet Explorer (8?), it would work again. Probably some file was corrupted somehow either by the malware or its removal.
Also, if you're interested you might try the IE Tab Firefox add-on. Worth a shot.

It isn't incredibly unclear.

Well, the person did ask was "Can anyone help with this?" and I couldn't apprehend it enough but nevertheless, it seems that you've solved this.

Sorry, what I meant about IE having problems was that, it starts up fine, but soon after I open it, the WPP fake antivirus window pops up again, preventing me from using IE.

I recently just happened to encounter the same problem at a relative's house. Perhaps install a better working anti-virus or something?

Have you referred to this manual removal guide? There may be something to help you there.
In the comments, somebody says the issue with IE is resolved by following it.

Already did everything that was listed that I could.
I wasn't able to find a few of the registry entries, though.

Scratch all this; it fixed itself after I restarted my computer this morning.

Can't you read? OP said not to introduce another browser as it defeats the purpose of his topic.
As for if IE didn't fix itself, you can update to IE8, or run HJT or GMER to see if there are any other hidden malicious contents within your the system.
