As you could tell from my other thread regarding the RAM, I'm trying upgrade my computer for as cheaply as possible.

So I was digging around and I found this card

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=42599&promoid=1051

for 40 bucks after MIR.

I got mixed feedback from my friends, so I just wanted some other opinions in the matter.

And these are my computer specs from the HP website.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00679529&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3199072&lang=en

It says I have 1 PCI-E slot empty, so I can use this card right? This is the first time I've ever tried to upgrade my computer, so forgive me for the stupid questions.

Thanks.

It depends. What do you do with your computer?

I watch movies, do homework and game on it.

I like to game, but I gotta stick with games that can run on low performance computers but I do have TF2.

I gotta run it at lowest settings though and still get framerate problems when a lot of stuff is happening at once.

I'm just looking out for cheap cards so I can play some stuff that requires a bit higher performance, so I don't have to use consoles all the time. =\ I prefer mouse and keyboard over dual analog sticks tbh.

Also, so I'm guessing that this card will be able to work with my computer? Because I hate buying things online, and then needing to refund them. Such a hassle to mail it back and stuff.

It should be perfect for TF2, maxing it out with no problems, although you'll probably run into a CPU bottleneck, as is with all Source engine games. Movies are generally decoded by your CPU, unless you're using some CUDA technologies (i.e. PowerDVD).

By the specs of your system, you'll probably have to buy a new power supply, since manufacturer's usually go for the cheapest model possible.

What does running into a CPU bottleneck?

Also, what would happen if I didn't buy another power supply? And if I did, would I have to buy coolant systems or more fans?

The 9600GSO is a rebranded 8800GS. Not a terrible card for the price, but not too terribly powerful either (at least compared to ~$100 4850/GTS250s and such). Good enough for source games though. As for PSUs, in a best case scenario the system will probably simply not boot up (probably failing the POST), worst case scenario, if the PSU is super-el-cheapo shit, the PSU will catch fire and fry half of your system. The latter probably won't happen but there's always the chance.

As for a CPU bottleneck, it's what happens when your graphics card is effectively running faster than your CPU, limiting it's effectiveness. The opposite would be a GPU bottleneck, where the CPU is processing data faster than the GPU (as is the case with most systems).

Aw crap.

Is there anyway to determine before hand whether or my my computer's current PSU will be enough to power it? And if not, how much extra power will it take?

Would this be sufficient if my current PSU doesn't cut it?

No matter what card you buy, id buy a 500w psu first. That way you have a lot less limits on stuff.

Well, that one is 550W, so I guess it's enough?

This CMPSU-400CX is way more than enough. Newegg.ca also offers it, and at a slightly better price.

That doesnt leave much room if he upgrades in the future. My buddy had to get a 680w psu because his new graphics card was a power whore. Just to find out the game he wanted to play wouldnt even run on it.

I'm confident that an HD5850 would run on it, considering it has the same, if not better (lower) TDP than the HD4870, which does, in fact, run on it.

Ah I'll just grab the cheapest one.

I'm not planning to upgrade it too much anyways. I'm just doing minor upgrades to my rig so that it can last another year or two, then I'm gonna build a new one instead of buying prebuilt ones.

Btw, that graphics card that I had in the OP is compatible with my mobo right?

Edit - This deal seems to be pretty hot.

I heard the OCZ is a pretty good brand, so I might pick this up. Cheaper the better. Wink

Yeah, your system should work fine with a 9600GSO and the OCZ StealthXStream 500W.
