Referring to my screenshots,

I understand that sounds can all be deleted from :/Windows/Media, but the names of sound schemes persist, and the delete button is disabled.

How do I remove those entries?

Why would you honestly do this?

to finish it off, I suppose. It's not like I need unusable sound entries in this, nor do I need useless sound files in every single copy of my system backups

a couple megabytes is hardly breaking the bank.

maybe you should just forget about W7 since you apparently live in the stone age.

so can you, the one in your personal cyber age, tell me something you should be very good at?

my original question is "How do I", not "Should I" - sorry if I hadn't made that very clear to you.

A lot of your "How do I"s are a little unnecessary nevertheless.
For instance, how often might you adjust your sound settings for this to matter? And if you want to change something there, are the entries for sounds you've removed really throwing you off that bad?

I agree with you that it is "unnecessary" - what's necessary is by definition what I cannot live without, and I'm certain I can live with irremovable entries in a sound preferences combobox, but

Persistent sound schemes sure aren't what it's supposed to be, and I am here to ask a simple question to see if anyone knows how to remove them. What's so difficult about this request? Am I wasting your precious time -on a forum-, even though this is a legitimate problem and ought to be solved?

If you don't have a solution for it (as I see it, nobody does), feel free to leave this thread quiet. If you have an answer, an archived copy of this thread will help those (eventually) who are building a full Windows 7 live DVD.

I totally agree. If your the kind of person who values little space and getting rid of useless default Windows stuff the vLite is the perfect application for you. It was originally made for Vista but also works on Windows 7, I think...
vLite About wrote:
vLite is a tool for customizing the Windows Vista installation before actually installing it.

Main features are:

* hotfix, language pack and driver integration
* component removal
* unattended setup
* tweaks
* split/merge Vista installation CDs
* create ISO and burn bootable CD/DVD

Windows Vista from Microsoft takes a lot of resources, we all know that. vLite provides you with an easy removal of the unwanted components in order to make Vista run faster and to your liking.

This tool doesn't use any kind of hacking, all files and registry entries are protected as they would be if you install the unedited version only with the changes you select.

It configures the installation directly before the installation, meaning you'll have to remake the ISO and reinstall it. This method is much cleaner, not to mention easier and more logical than doing it after installation on every reinstall.
